GEOCACHE SITES

Geo Cache Sites .... COMING SOON!

What is Geocaching? This geocaching adventure is essentially a treasure hunt, a search for small “caches” (using a GPS enabled device) which have been placed in strategic locations around Holmes County for people to find.

These caches are small plastic containers containing a log inside to track visitation and fun factoids relating to their place.

The Holmes County Historical Society invites adventurous individuals to join in a unique family-friendly treasure hunt activity of Geocaching.

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. The term, GPS, stands for Global Positioning System and it is a space-based navigation system. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.

Players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using GPS-enabled devices and then share their experiences online.

It is hoped that by exploring historical sites (some well-known, some not known), and reading some of the descriptions pertaining to the history of the location, that a spark will be ignited for people to explore our past and perhaps join the Holmes County Historical Society.

Plans are underway to establish a series of sites that are of historical and cultural interests within Holmes County. An initial introductory event is also being planned for the Bonifay community. Those interested in geocaching are encouraged to contact us by email so that notification can be given as to details of this program.
