HOLMES COUNTY

HERITAGE TOUR

The Historic Highway 90 Corridor will be an unforgettable drive through the unique   history, natural wonders and remarkable culture of Holmes, Washington, Jackson, Gadsden and Walton Counties. Expansion of interpretive opportunities and the use  of modern technology to help visitors locate and learn about points of interest will make the corridor one of the most unique in the nation.

The Historic Highway 90 Corridor through Holmes County parallels the historic CSX railroad through the old timber country of Northwest Florida. This is a region rich in railroad history and two of the primary communities along the county’s segments of U.S. Highway 90; Bonifay and Westville, owe their existence to the coming of the railroad in the late 1800s.

The Holmes County segments of the Historic Highway 90 Corridor stretch from Holmes Creek on the east to the Walton County line on the west. The county’s portions of Historic Highway 90 are divided by a section of  Washington County that projects north across the highway and divides the highway into two segments.

The Holmes County segments of the corridor feature numerous historic sites, historic structures and other points of interest. These range from historic homes, cemeteries and steamboat wrecks to the sites of ghost towns, Civil War raids and even Prohibition-era gunfights. The Choctawhatchee River Blueway intersects the corridor and western Holmes County in particular is noted for its magnificent natural springs and other eco-tourism resources.

The completion of the Master Plans for the segments of the corridor through neighboring Washington and Jackson Counties, and the decisions by Walton and Gadsden Counties to join the Historic Highway 90 effort are of particularly significance to Holmes County.  Since the county has limited resources for advertising and promotion of its tourism assets, its inclusion in a  continuous corridor stretching from Tallahassee on the east to DeFuniak Springs on the west will allow it to benefit from a strong unified  promotional effort.

This study identified 78 key historical and ecological points of interest along the Holmes County segment of the Historic Highway 90 Corridor. Included among these are two state parks and one National Historic District. To fully develop the tourist potential of the corridor, additional interpretation is necessary to improve the experience of traveling Historic Highway 90 for visitors. From the total of 37 points of interest, 32 were identified as key resources to be included in this plan.         — excerpted from  2016 Historic Highway 90 Corridor Master Plan —

This Master Plan (as developed by local author and historian, Dale Cox, his associate, Rachael Conrad and many others) will prove to be a huge asset to the efforts of historic preservation and promotion of the Holmes County region. Through the information provided and  information of historical nature through the stories and collection of the Historical Society, this plan will serve as a benchmark by which we measure opportunities to keep our History within Reach of its residents and visitors. This plan was made in cooperation of the Holmes County Chamber of Commerce & the Holmes County Tourist Development Council.
